Work is underway on a new £ 1.3million community learning center in Seaforth funded by Sefton Council and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority through the Skills Capital Fund.

The renovated Cambridge Road Community Learning Center in Seaforth, Merseyside, will provide better access to vocational training for currently unemployed residents.

The investment in the Grade II listed building will include a complete renovation of the ground floor facilities, a new reception area and a café. The work will also include the repair and improvement of the original features of the building, with exterior improvements to the roof, windows, brickwork and stone.

Learning Hub users will also benefit from investments in new IT infrastructure, the school lobby will be reconfigured into a new flexible teaching area, and the building will be fully Wi-Fi enabled.

Following a call for tenders, Liverpool-based contractor Cunard Construction was appointed to carry out the work. The company has extensive experience in renovating important listed buildings, while providing social value to users of the center and the immediate community.

Cllr Ian Maher, Sefton Board Leader, said:

“The Sefton Community Learning Hub provides a fantastic community resource for adult learners to access skills and bridge the employment gap.

“These renovations will breathe new life into Cambridge Road, secure its long-term future and help us attract more learners to an inviting, stimulating and connected environment.

“This will be especially important in light of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, which will see more local residents rely on community learning services.

“In addition to improving learning opportunities in central Cambridge Road, the refurbishment will also reduce its daily running costs and create the potential to generate income. “

Until the redevelopment is complete, services will continue to be provided by the Council’s Community Learning Service at other nearby locations.

Cllr Maher added:

“This investment unlocks the potential of Cambridge Road and preserves the future of an iconic building. The Sefton Community Learning Hub is a well-used asset but can play an even bigger role in the community.

“This is an important step in enabling more learners and service users to access Cambridge Road. “

Steve Rotheram, Liverpool City Region Underground Mayor, said:

“Even as we face the immediate impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, we must continue to invest and plan for our future so that our economic recovery begins as quickly as possible. Education and training will be at the heart of our recovery as we ensure that people in the City of Liverpool area have the skills and learning they need to thrive. By investing in infrastructure projects such as this Learning Hub in Cambridge Road, we are investing in the future of our city-region. “

Regional Growth and Local Government Minister Luke Hall MP said:

“The Sefton Community Learning Hub is already providing exceptional education and training services.

“The Hub refurbishment, supported by a £ 1.15million investment from the Local Growth Fund, will protect this important service, while improving facilities for staff and learners.

“Now more than ever, equipping people with the skills they need to be successful is critical.

James Flannery, Construction Manager at Cunard Construction, said:

“We are delighted to have been chosen as the preferred bidder for the Cambridge Road project. As a company we have a track record of renovating historic, listed and locally significant buildings in the Liverpool City area and the North West.

“We will be working in partnership with Sefton MBC and the immediate community to create a stimulating community learning center in Seaforth.

“It is imperative that we work with clients to maximize the best possible social value as part of the construction process. Sefton and the Combined Authority are used to including quality elements in the tendering process, which requires construction contractors to provide a range of benefits to the community when projects are delivered.

“We will work with the Council to provide a full range of social value elements for the project to create opportunities for the residents of Sefton, while also supporting the Hubs social enterprise which is doing a fantastic job at Sefton. “

The Seaforth Community Learning Center is funded by the Skills Capital Fund element of the Local Growth Fund, which is awarded to the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and invested through the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.
