Free high pressure boiler operator training

AUBURN/RUMFORD – Central Maine Community College’s (CMCC) Workforce and Career Development Center offers free training for high-pressure boiler operators. The first cohort is Wednesday evenings, July 20 through October 17, 2022, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Nine Dragons Paper in Rumford. Registration is compulsory and 10 free places are available. The second cohort is offered on Wednesdays, September 7 to December 14, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., in person at CMCC in Auburn. Information and links to register for the program are available at

The High Pressure Boiler Operator training provides a hands-on approach, knowledge and techniques of power plant operation and is designed to prepare the student to take the Maine licensing exam. Upon completion of the course and the required service experience, the student may take the state exam at CMCC. The cost of the exam is covered. Before taking the exam, students must meet the state requirement for service experience as a high-pressure boiler operator under a state-issued training license. The average starting salary for a high pressure boiler operator is $42,000 in the Lewiston/Auburn area.

These programs are funded by the Maine Jobs and Recovery Program (MJRP). Participants are eligible for a training course and must be at least 18 years old; possess a high school diploma, GED or HiSet; and be a US citizen and/or authorized to work in the United States. Criminal background check required. COVID vaccine required for CMCC campus. Additionally, applicants for MJRP-funded programs must be dislocated, unemployed or underemployed workers, or someone whose employment has been affected by COVID-19. Underemployed people can be seen as working part-time but seeking full-time work or working in an occupation below their skills.
