Comcast Washington and YWCA-Seattle | King | Snohomism announced the opening of a new Lift Zone Lab: Digital Community Learning Space, which offers free WiFi access, at the YWCA Somerset Village Flats in Lynnwood, Washington. Comcast provided free Internet connectivity, a $76,000 investment, and state-of-the-art technology transformation for the lab.

The YWCA’s Somerset Village Apartments is a 64-unit, affordable, permanent housing complex for families with incomes at or below 60% of the region’s median income. Residents also have access to case management, support services, community services, and referrals to health care, job training, and employment resources. The Digital Community Learning Space enhances these services by making technology available to help residents learn life and career skills through training, education, computer classes, internships and job placement. The technological equipment installed includes a 3D printer, an Oculus VR, a projector and screen, an omnidirectional microphone and speakers, a camera, Chromebooks, a gaming computer, and more.

“We are thrilled to open the doors to the new digital learning space and give women and families in our community free access to high-speed Wi-Fi and state-of-the-art technology,” said Mary Anne Dillon, Executive Director of YWCA, Snohomish County.

Cena Conteh, YWCA Community Center Coordinator for Somerset Village Apartments, adds, “The connectivity and access the lab provides to our community bridges the digital equity gap that women and youth face in the county of Snohomish.

“We greatly respect the powerful work that YWCA is doing to support homeless women and families, especially women of color,” said Rodrigo Lopez, Senior Vice President, Region, Comcast Washington. “We are proud of the Lift Zone Lab that we partnered with YWCA to open in Lynnwood and are thrilled to see it making a difference in the lives of members of the community served by YWCA.”

“I am so impressed to learn about all of the value-added, mission-driven services that YWCA of Snohomish County provides to our community; it is certainly life-changing,” said Amit B. Singh, president of Edmonds College. “I look forward to our partnership, so that Edmonds College can also contribute to such a great cause.”

Comcast provides the lab with free Wi-Fi as part of the company’s efforts to roll out its “Lift Zones” program to local community centers across Washington and across the country. Working with cities, community organizations, and local nonprofit partners, Comcast has now installed free Wi-Fi in more than 90 community centers statewide.

The Lift Zone Lab features an artistic mural created in collaboration between YWCA, local nonprofit Urban ArtWorks, and Comcast’s Women’s Network Employee Resource Group. The mural’s message, “Keep Going, Keep Growing,” communicates the YWCA’s goal of helping women and families move from survival to prosperity and transition to professional and social success.

This effort is part of Project UP, Comcast’s $1 billion commitment to reach tens of millions of people over the next 10 years with the tools, resources and skills needed to succeed in a digital world. Project UP is Comcast’s enterprise-wide initiative to advance digital equitywhich includes Internet Essentialsthe nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program.

Since 2011, Internet Essentials has connected a cumulative total of more than 56,000 low-income Snohomish County residents to high-speed home Internet, the overwhelming majority of whom were previously unregistered. The comprehensive design of Internet Essentials addresses three significant barriers to broadband adoption. This includes access to free digital literacy training in print, online and in person; the option of buying a low-cost, heavily subsidized Internet-ready computer; and low-cost high-speed Internet service for $9.95 per month, plus tax.
